I feel like it’s been a million yrs since I made a post about genealogy.
So I will resort to my norm.
Public records are your friends.
In today’s world we have many businesses refusing to enforce mask wearing & some have even opened against standing orders.
Do you want these
businesses to have your $? Normalize researching the businesses you transact with. Where do I look you say?
Secretary of States offices typically. But that’s not the only place, County Recorders, and of course the courts.
Unpaid tax liens, avoidance of paying work comp, judgments
Are all indicators of the health of a business.
You would be appalled to know for example, that some employers will withhold taxes and then not forward them to the government entity for which they are owed. Or duck out on paying work comp.
Yes really.
I see it all the time.
Why does this matter you ask?
Think about it.
Why should they have the privilege of operating a business if they are cutting so many corners? Trust me we as consumers are paying for it as are small businesses everywhere.
Also normalize researching contractors you use at home or
For your small businesses.
Yes you can! Do they have a license? Are they insured? Make them provide PROOF in advance of work.
And have they ever been sued? Do they have outstanding liens that may have stemmed from faulty work? Do they have civil judgments of any kind?
We don’t have to go through life blindly.
Hiring a babysitter? Research them too. Yes, you have the right to look at their public records.
If you don’t know where to look, by all means ask.
And yes, this is not a direct genealogy message. But public records are my life, for genealogy and for my day job.
They really can help you make better decisions in life.
Research is your friend and the best thing about public records is that they are public.
