A breakdown of the 10 core things that helped us at @sendxio go from 0 to 12k monthly organic sessions.

1/ Maintain a high content publishing frequency. On average 10-15 pieces of content got published every month on our site.
Pages take time to start ranking. The more pages you put out, the more bets you place. And the more chances you have of ranking well over time.

2/ If your content is not answering the right intent, it won't rank. Period.
A page titled “Email Marketing for Bloggers” will never rank for “Email Marketing Bloggers”. A listicle of bloggers will.
But a page titled “Mailchimp Pricing” will also rank for “Mailchimp Cost”.

3/ To rank for the right search intent, you need strong keyword research.
That is where all your topics and the type of pages to create for them should come from.
We built a template card in @trello where I entered all the core things required for page creation.

4/ Get as many backlinks as you can in the beginning.
Even though, the quality of backlinks and the pages you get backlinks for are more important.
You can adjust and iterate after you've built a repeatable method for acquiring backlinks at scale.

When you’re starting out, you’ll be having negligible authority. At that point, it’s important to get a good no. of backlinks. Once you’ve started growing, you can stop working with lower DRs.
Once http://sendx.io reached DR>70, we stopped working with DR<45.

5/ Update your old content frequently. This is a heavily underrated activity in SEO.
Understand the search intent, analyze what your competitors are talking about, and fill in the gaps in your content.
This gave us 8-10% growth, week on week, once we built this as a process.

6/ If a page is ranking on top, don’t make any changes to it. Google is constantly updating its algorithm, and it’s not always clear why a page is ranking at a position.
If you think you’re ranking well by mistake, stay put. Let Google push you down. Then you can do an update.

7/ The moment you start seeing a positive outcome from a particular task, build a repeatable process out of it.
This will enable that task's outcomes to compound over time.
We use Trello to run our major processes: new content creation, updating old content, & guest posts.

Here are a few pointers to keep such boards running smoothly:
- Have a core metric for each process/board. For something like Existing Content Optimization, it was session growth/page.
This ensured that the right pages are being worked on and the cards are moving accordingly.

- Speed of card movement is crucial to track here. This ensures that the process is moving along smoothly. Any card which is at one spot for more than a week requires your attention.
We have weekly team calls just for bubbling up these slow-moving cards.

8/ The initial goal should be to capture top spots for all BOFU keywords that are important for you.
Especially if you’re in a competitive space.
TOFU can help build authority and get visitors, but it won’t amount to many leads.

9/ Set monthly goals. It helps set a direction for the whole month for the team. And it also will ensure you're prioritizing the right tasks and utilizing the right resources.
We kept our monthly goal to get a 15% month on month increase in organic sessions throughout.

10/ The most important thing is to stick to it. Your efforts will not show results in the first 3-4 months.
But as long as you’re serving the right search intent and constantly identifying bottlenecks in your processes and fixing them, your traffic growth will happen.

Mid 2020, we were doing kw research, publishing quality content & building 40 backlinks on average/mo. Yet our traffic was not growing.
So we decided to go back to our old content and update one page for the Featured Snippet. 3 days later, it went up.

After that, it became clear that we need to spend significant resources on updating under-performing old content.
That’s how we identified that this bottleneck needs to be addressed ASAP if growth has to continue.
Now we have 1 person in our team just for updating old content.
