"When you start to pay attention to the business side of farming, it is absolutely possible to build a more profitable farm ... but it has to be a combination of best farming practices and focusing on investing and learning the business side."

"I think of marketing as 'serving people.' When you shift your mindset to coming from a place of serving your community, and showing people how you serve them ... marketing becomes so much more natural, instead of sales-y."

"A commodity is a race to the bottom ... people with the lowest prices win. Marketing is about building that relationship with customers. People buy farm fresh food because of relationships."

The #1 reason farmers have success? They learn how to create a "profitable mindset."

"They believe they can figure out what it takes to build relationships and they're willing to believe this type of marketing will work."

"A simple, clear, even one-page website (for your farm) ... that's the very foundation of what makes all these other channels (Facebook, Google, etc.) work."

Smith says that for farms, the most profitable way to market to your customers is by using #email marketing. "(Social media) followers are not as valuable as subscribers."

"You have to know who you're selling to. You need to grow your email list with engaged subscribers. And you need to build trust. People subscribe and follow because they trust you."

"You want your customer to see that you are the solutions to their problem. Nobody in the grocery store is doing that — they're just selling eggs and meat and fruit and vegetables."

Smith says that after identifying your target "dream follower," it's time to start growing your email subscriber list by using "free incentives" to encourage customers to subscribe.

Step of 3 in building profitability is building relationship and trust.

"If you're trying to get people to buy outside of the commodity grocery store, you've got to build trust. The key to building a relationship is consistent communication."
