I'm so excited to join @19thnews and it seems like a thread about why is the thing to do. I was lucky enough to work with them on their first stories and publish them with the Post, so I kind of know what I'm getting myself into
First, I get to work with @emarvelous, who is a tenacious reporter, fantastic interviewer and a force and someone I am happy to talk books or argue nut grafs with
The whole team, under the great leadership of @andreamvaldez, has been putting out interesting, original journalism. And the leadership and vision of @eramshaw and @amzam are downright inspirational.
My 7-year-old's reaction when told someone is the first woman to do x is always "that's ridiculous that she's the first." Women make up more than half of the voting population but are broadly underrepresented. Whose voices are heard, what issues are focused on -- that matters.
I am thrilled to join a newsroom with such passion behind it. I can't wait to help tell 19th* stories, ones that reflect our world as it is, to be at a place with equity and empathy at its core. This is a big leap for me -- but one that was surprisingly easy to take.
