People keep sending this to me. I’m a technology reporter at the NYT and I think it might be helpful to explain why takes like this play into the worst misogynist gatekeepers in SV... https://twitter.com/default_friend/status/1336113020314021891
What Kat’s tweet does is buy into the idea that the only “real” tech coverage is of funding rounds the “business” side, not the user side, including the harms tech platforms inflict on society and/or users, or the impact these companies have on our lives and culture.
What’s interesting is that men who cover “internet culture” are never subject to these attacks. My colleagues Charlie Warzel and Kevin Roose and others like Ben Collins who cover disinfo and the way tech is impacting culture never have their credentials questioned.
For instance, this type of thing is exactly what I do. It’s a piece discussing the rise/popularity of an internet figure & the role a platform played his cultural relevance written by my colleague Kevin Roose. These pieces by men are considered “essential” https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/29/technology/dan-bongino-has-no-idea-why-facebook-loves-him.html
When I write a similar piece on Emma Chamberlain, for instance and how YouTube platformed her and the role she had in transforming the behavior of power users there, it’s written off as not “real” tech coverage. This is time and time again and there’s too many examples to count
For way too long tech reporting has been dominated by men who do business journalism. Ignoring the user side and the cultural impact of these platforms, their power users, and how they’re reshaping politics and society is critical, especially as the world gets more networked
The whole “internet culture” beat is still so woefully under covered and I hope any young people reading this thread ignore tweets like Kat’s b/c we need MORE tech coverage, not less. Grateful that my colleagues at NYT have a comprehensive and modern understanding of technology🥰

To anyone still following this please do not attack @default_friend. She was asking this Q in good faith and I don’t think realized the history of this debate, how media cos are structured. Attacking her isn’t the move 🙏🏻. Let’s all just advocate for more inclusive tech coverage
