In honor of the one-year anniversary of Charleston3, I’m going to thread up some all-time Dick Punch #Phish shows.

Note: In order to get the most out of a Dick Punch show, you really need to be there. So sadly, we won’t be covering anything from the LA Forum or Texas.

2/11

First up is 10/21/96 MSG.

It’s hard to describe how weak Fall 96 started—especially coming off December 95 > a fiery Summer closing with the Clifford Ball.

The best thing I can say about this show is “the Reba was pleasant.” First regular season MSG shows and such duds.
3/11

12/12/97 -

In retrospect, this show is epic. Set II is hellfire & brimstone.

In the moment, that S2 setlist was exactly what you didn’t want to hear in 97. Plus the S1 2001 & Tweezer were both substandard. Bonus Dick Punch Points for being 1st Albany show after 12/9/95
4/11

Nassau > Albany 99 Run

I was hesitant to include these bc there is plenty of greatness in these shows, especially 10/10. But collectively, there are enough WTF Dick Punch moments to make you question what was going on with the band (Are they not healthy? Tired of playing?)
5/11

The Legend: 12/17/99 Hampton

Between a reinvigorated December tour + the prior Hampton runs being massive, the hype behind it was immense. Looks mostly harmless on paper, but it’s the first show I recall nearly everyone disliking and wanting to tell you why. What a mess.
6/11

Turkey Tour 2003

Lots of highlights when you go back to these. But it the moment, they were a big step back from Spring & Summer 03. My crew walked out of this run thinking 2.0 might not last much longer. Some even canceled their Miami plans (a very bad call in retrospect)
7/

8/9/04 Hampton

This show was added long after tour was announced, sold, and Trey announced the band was done.

The allure/oddity of an extra night on Jerry’s birthday at Hampton added last minute made many fans jump through very expensive hoops to attend. LOL at that set II.
8/11

12/31/11

Alaska > Velvet Sea deep in set 3 on NYE after the show was already the weakest NYE show since 1996 or maybe ever.

That is all.
9/11

10/31/13

“I don’t believe the rumors. No way they’d cover their own album.”

“The Phishbill is just a fake out. No way those song titles are real.”

“Oh no.”

Putting aside the courage to play that show, it just didn’t work. Even an epic S3 couldn’t save that night.
10/11

12/31/16

Setting aside your feelings on Petrichor (personally I dig the piece, but it doesn’t belong in an arena rock show), what followed it in the third set is the stuff of legends. I’m still laughing.
11/11

12/8/19 Charleston

The no repeat tour gives. The no repeat tour takes. This night, it took and kept on taking. Charleston3 could have gone a lot of great ways. Instead we got an incoherent jukebox show with some of the biggest clunkers out there. An unforgettable night.
ps - Some of you are asking about Vegas 2004. 4/15/04 may be the worst show I've seen. But to be a Dick Punch, the letdown has to be unexpected.

Between Vegas debauchery, Kuroda at home, and Fenton Williams blinding us with strobes from the 1st song, Vegas 04 wasn't surprising.
