THREAD🧵: Since we went public around Labor Day, we’ve gotten tons of questions about what it’s like to organize in a right-to-work state. Turns out, there's a lot of misinformation out there!

Buckle up, we're myth busting…
A state having “right-to-work” laws does NOT make it illegal to organize a labor union there. That right is federally protected by the National Labor Relations Act ( @NLRB)
What right-to-work does is prohibit requiring a person to join a union or pay union dues as a condition of employment.

The idea is that every person has the right to join a union, but should not be required to do so.
Employers have funneled millions into right-to-work law campaigns and supported the 2018 Supreme Court decision in Janus v. AFSCME that requiring non-unionized employees to pay dues to support union activities from which all employees benefit violates the First Amendment.
Unfortunately, what is sold as labor freedom usually ends up costing workers. 💸💸💸
They are "dangerous, confusing restrictions on Americans’ basic rights on the job. These statutes empower employers by undermining workers’ right to organize and rolling back the gains — better wages/ working conditions/ hours — that unions fought to secure,” from @washingtonpost
BREAKING NEWS: Right to work laws have no effect on organizing, and it certainly doesn’t mean you can be fired for organizing (that’s illegal).
Remember, the name “right to work” is designed to be misleading! It is supposed to make people think labor unions are illegal. There are 27 right to work states: AL, AZ, AR, KS, FL, GA, ID, IN, IA, KY, LA, MI, MS, NE, NV, NC, ND, OK, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, WV, WI and WY.
So now you know what right-to-work is and that it does not make organizing illegal. 😎😎😎
