One year ago I was met by two police officers as I was leaving for work. They were there to tell me my son in Montreal had placed a 911 call in mental distress and they could now not reach him. His phone number directed them to my house, his home address. (1/4)
They couldn't tell me he was ok. They took his Montreal address & told me they'd contact me when they heard from Montreal police. They never called. I spent my day trying to find my son, calling hospitals where I could not speak the language seeking to get any information. (2/4)
That evening I travelled alone to Montreal not knowing what I would face. Luckily he is still with us but the trauma from those long unknowing hours remains with me. There are so many things that the police here and in Montreal did wrong in this situation. (3/4)
If Police are to be mental health responders, they must do better!! Mental health is health, not a criminal act!! (4/4)
