1. The late Chuck Yeager, the first to fly supersonic, was a Pak Air Force consultant in '71. That's when a young Navy pilot, deputed to the IAF, blew his personal plane to pieces in a daring ground attack mission. That young pilot went on to command the Indian Navy.
2. Honoured with a Vir Chakra for gallantry, the young Navy pilot was the first to train on the Navy's new Sea Harrier jump jets in the UK and flew the jet off the same INS Viraat which presently faces the prospect of being broken down to metal scrap.
3. Along the way, that no-longer-so-young fighter jock went on to command Viraat as well. Not too bad a career profile. Now retired, @arunp2810 occasionally tracks his twitter-feed.
4. Admiral Arun Prakash (retd.), former Navy Chief, is among a host of Navy officers and men dismayed at the prospect of Viraat being demolished since we evidently lack the will to make her into a world-class maritime museum.
5. Anyway, this is a brilliant piece written by the man himself - you need some time to go through it. Please do. Its about that fateful day when he had Yeager's plane in his Hunter's gunsight and hosed it down with plenty of lead. http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/IAF/history/1971war/1278-chuck-yeager.html#gsc.tab=0
