Confirmed: The @UKFPO will be removing publications & additional degrees from 2023.
Here's my personal thoughts why this is detrimental to many. A thread:

1] An economy of points exists for a reason.
Understandably it should be criticised if the economy was not accessible to all, BUT in today's age, it simply is. Many student socs and trainee-lead initiatives exist to provide research opportunities. Anyone can be involved.

2] The economy has many stakeholders
It is not a one-way system. I simply do not believe the many initiatives and studies going on today could exist without students interested in pushing themselves & their careers.
Altruism only goes so far.

3] Yes. It is ultimately for our patients & healthcare as a whole, there is no doubt about it
But, this will remove a portion of the incentive and motivation for many. I simply couldn't justify the personal cost if it wasn't going towards for my future.
There are only 24h/day

4] I spend many evenings writing manuscripts, doing extracurricular projects, missing valuable with family and my partner to be a competitive candidate and better provide for my future family 10y+ down the line.
5] Intercalation is a cost. £18,000+for many for a year.
I do not believe many would buy in to this if it did not hold value on paper, paper that will hold doors open down the line.
What about the departments that have a large no. of intercalators? What happens to their funds?

6] I'm on my second intercalation now, undertaking a PhD
This is an additional 3 years of my life. I have an incredible department behind me to support me financially & pastorally, but it is to achieve a very specific job down the line in an already competitive system

7] But that is what it is - a system
I am happy to compete for it
I am happy to work for it
Competition drives the market. Everything comes at a cost in life.
This was a justifiable financial, time & energy in the grand scheme of things. It is what wakes me up every morning

8] ... I'm astonished that this substantial effort will no longer be recognised.
I'm just as dumbfounded that I had to hear about it on Twitter first - I had hoped it hold as much value as the majority of content on social media, but alas, a nightmare for myself and many

9] Lastly & most importantly - why weren't students of whom are graduating in 2023 or thereafter not given a choice to cast a vote in this?
This goes beyond student panels & orgs striving to represent the many.
Everyone needs their own voice heard - this affects everyone.
