I've been thinking a lot recently about what "success" means in video games, and how gross and icky it all feels, especially in the UK

Apparently success is investors! IPOs! Hiring tons of people! Increasing your output! Pivoting!! More investors!! Growth growth growth!!!

🤮
Here's what "success" looks like to me:

- Everyone at No More Robots is paid way above the average salary in the UK
- Everyone received 5 figure bonuses this year ("A bigger bonus than all my 6 years of bonuses combined from my previous job")
- Full private healthcare for all
- We've given money and resources to loads of good causes, including WarChild, Game Devs of Colour Expo, Girls Game Lab and more totalling 6 figure sums, and I plan to go harder in 2021
- We've provided free QA testing to marginalised game devs through our No More Bugs initiative
- Every single one of our games has been successful for every developer we've worked with. How many "successful" studios can say that?

In fact, how many "successful" studios can claim to satisfy all of the points I've highlighted above?
Games from No More Robots also made nearly $10 million in revenue in 2020, which is obviously a tasty number...

but just shows that you can have *RAGING NUMBERS SUCCESS* while also making sure that everyone you work with is as happy as possible, and you're making a real impact
My point is, video game studios are so obsessed with GROWTH and ACQUISITIONS and WEALTH, that they quite often fail to make sure that all of their employees and developers are happy and looked after properly

For me, that's not success, no matter how big your numbers get 🤷‍♂️
In 2021, we'll be:

- Giving away shit-tons of money to causes that need it
- Caring about every single game launch, rather than just focusing on the launches that look like they'll be our biggest
- Making sure every person we work with is as happy as possible

That's success!
