Once again, I read a sample of progressive activism that lacks nuance and it’s boiled down to a catch phrase that will scare the hell out of millions of people that would be reachable.
Here I go down a thread, join me if you will. https://twitter.com/ayannapressley/status/1336114753903669248

First of all, I’m definitely more left of center. I’d like to think I lean more AOC/Bernie than Biden, so on policy I side more with Rep. Pressley, but that tweet isn’t helpful as PR or messaging.
For personal context on this issue, i work as a Sec. 8 coordinator at a PHA.

Many states have established a freeze on evictions if the cause is lack of payment. For that I ABSOLUTELY agree with. With millions of people losing income, evicting renters during a pandemic because of lack of payment due to job loss is downright immoral in my perspective.
That said, I COMPLETELY sympathize with landlords that rely on rent payments to cover their own bills to manage the property or rely on the income from rent to support themselves.
And I truly respect the landlords that are biting the bullet to keep their tenants housed.

When the pandemic started in my area, my counterpart and I worked hard to help voucher holders who lost their jobs. Those with vouchers, many were lucky that the PHA picked up more of their rent if they lost their jobs. Most Americans aren’t lucky enough to have a Sec. 8 voucher.
Now, back to my point about the “evictions are violence” tweet.
Yeah, if it’s about nonpayment during a pandemic.
BUT!!!!

Let’s just face facts, some tenants are straight up a holes, and that is my boots on the ground first hand account.
I love my job. I love helping Seniors and disabled on fixed incomes. I love helping the single moms find stable homes for their kids. I feel like I’m helping.

That said, some people, voucher holders or not, are self centered, amoral, narcissistic criminal assholes that should be evicted.
One landlord that I’ve worked with is a saint of a man that tries his best to help people that are down on their luck only to get burned by tenants that trash their property, or are mixed up in drug activity, or frequent visits by the police for disruptive behavior.
During the pandemic, he couldn’t evict one tenant because of the freeze on evictions even though he had video evidence of the tenant selling drugs out of the apartment.
I felt more sympathy for the landlord than the tenant. Here is a guy trying to give low income people a home, and now he can’t get an actual criminal out of his property because he couldn’t evict.
Now, let’s go back to the tweet.
Democrats and progressive are really shitty at messaging. That’s just a fact, and they need to find a way to get better, and quick.
Republicans get away with so much shit because they can win at marketing.

As much as I hate it. MAGA is a better slogan than Defund the Police or Evictions are Violence.
Looking at the nuance of it, MAGA is dog shit and Defund the Police and Evictions are Violence are policies I can get behind.
But the wording Democrats use scare the shit out of the wrong people and cause unnecessary roadblocks to achieving their goals.

Long story short... look at how many goddamn tweets it took for me to say,
“evictions are violence but...”
Until Democrats can figure out how to improve their messaging around policies the public actually support, GOP will be able to terrorize the country to prevent movement.
