A Thread: State of European Tech — 10 Charts You Should See (for the really lazy readers) ( @atomico)

1) 2020 is on track to hit a record level of investment into European startups (could be $41bn)
2) The top 10 largest rounds alone raised $4.1bn (10% of the TOTAL AMOUNT RAISED) and came from a nice geographical spread - @Klarna @northvolt @RevolutApp @KarmaKitchenLDN @CazooUK Auto1 @Lilium @tierscooters @Mirakl_FR @UiPath
3) Series B is the tricky one — it's harder for a European startup to raise this round than US startups. Plus, this year, there's been a notable drop in rounds of $20m-50m (hard to raise on the back of momentum when the world has stopped...)
4) London remains top dog (debate for how long amongst yourselves). Paris comes in second, Stockholm has nipped into spot #3. N.B. Megarounds have a BIG impact on these numbers, especially when it comes to slightly smaller cities.
5) The ecosystem is becoming less reliant on government funding — which is a good sign. More institutional investors from the US are participating in European rounds (up 36% since 2016) and US investors are setting up shop over here too.
6) European startups still don't fail as fast as those in the US — but that might be starting to change. In the US, 14% of companies exit after the first round of funding; in Europe it's 9%. Exits can be good, because talent gets recycled, investors get money back...
7) Europe’s companies have the same likelihood of becoming a unicorn as a US company. (That's a 1/100 chance BTW — so bonne chance!)
8) European startups no longer feel like they NEED to move to the US to make it. $bn+ startups founded 2000-2009 are much more likely to have set up across the Atlantic than younger startups.
9) Coronavirus has made it easier for lots of startups to hire — there were fewer 'hard to fill' engineering positions this year than last.
10) There is still A LOT OF WORK TO DO on the gender and ethnic diversity fronts. This is just how few deals involve female founders (while Europe-wide data on founders who identify as non-white is basically non-existent...)
