Given Soulwax are about to drop something today, permit me a wee thread with a tale... So I worked with the guys on the Radio Soulwax project that was a series of video mixes. They were genius; ahead of their time given how we consume things entirely through video these days...
ANYWAY - I asked them once about what was next in the series and they told me about how as Belgians they'd always been a bit disparaging of that Banzai-style happy hardcore. However one day, they realised that if you played it on the wrong speed...
... it didn't sound a million miles from their own music, heheh. So, they proceeded to do a mix of Banzai-style happy hardcore... all slowed down from its usual hyper-BPM vibe to one more Soulwax-ish...
.. but for the video part, they got a load of OG Belgian hardcore ravers, filmed them dancing to the mix at the *original* tempo... then slowed it all back down. End result? This bona fide classic: Magnificent.
It's also kinda funny to listen to this music in 2020 and realise it has aged incredibly well (at least when played at this tempo). Definitely one that stood the test of time.
