We continue our #16Days
, this morning, in conversation with women #Panchayat leaders from different states in India. The big question today is: do the women who oversee the safety of others have access to #safety themselves? Stay tuned for live updates.
#GenderBasedViolence

#GenderBasedViolence
We open the session by remembering Savitribai Phule, India's first female teacher and a key figure in Dalit history. Panchayat leader Malti tai sings a beautiful Marathi song about #genderequality! "Stree"
and "purush"
are both wheels of the same vehicle for change. #16Days

Did you know that there are more than 46% women representatives in India's Panchayati Raj Institutions? It far exceeds the reservation quota of 33%. And it's imperative that we talk about safe workplaces for them.

Archana tai, regional coordinator Mahila Rajsatta Andolan ( @rscdindia), on challenges that she + other women #panchayat members face:

2. "Malak" (husband) dictates when/why they go for meetings

Archana tai recalls one incident, when a blood camp was organized. People said panchayat women members "idhar-udhar mooh maarti hain, AIDS ho jata hai, isliye camp laga hai." This is the state of things! #16Days

The women #panchayat leaders says there's a society-wide effort to control them through character assassination + rape threats + #GenderBasedViolence. Archana tai wishes more people knew about this. RT and spread her message. @rscdindia @16DaysCampaign
A former woman sarpanch says she was often harassed and frightened while trying to do her job. The women deserve safe workplaces, an end to #GenderBasedViolence, and respect. @rscdindia @16DaysCampaign #16DaysOfActivism
