Rick: Only 17% of black people say they will get the coronavirus vaccine; 49% of black people say they won't get it.
Propane Jane: It's partly b/c of a lack of trust in the healthcare system, plus decades of experimentation like Tuskegee experiment.
@docrocktex26
Propane Jane: There is also a lack of trust of anything from the Trump administration. Warp Speed is a terrible name for the vaccine program as it gives the idea that the vaccine was rushed.
@docrocktex26
Propane Jane: Presidents Obama, Clinton, & Bush have said they'll get the vaccine on camera in an effort to instill confidence in the American people that the vaccine is safe to get.
@docrocktex26
Rick: The coronavirus is a two-dose vaccine; how much will it cost? I think it should be free to everyone to encourage people to get it. I worry it'll be another mask-like issue, that it becomes political.
Propane Jane: Just the hurdles we have to jump over to get people to get the flu vaccine, and the antivaxxers...and that was all before the pandemic. It'll be hard to get to 70-75% of the population vaccinated. And how many people don't go back for the 2nd vaccine?
@docrocktex26
Propane Jane: The coronavirus vaccine won't be effective if you only get the first dose.
Rick: And you have to get both doses from the same company, either Pfizer or Moderna.
@docrocktex26
Propane Jane: The test groups experienced fatigue for a couple of days after vaccine--will this discourage people from getting second dose?
@docrocktex26
Propane Jane: We need a huge public health educational push to get the messaging out to communities, especially black & brown communities, to encourage people to get the vaccine.
@docrocktex26
Propane Jane: We've been saying the same thing ad nauseum for months and months now: Wear a mask. Stay home. Wash your hands.
Do people even trust doctors any more? Dr. Fauci is getting death threats. Trump admin. doesn't trust basic science.
@docrocktex26
Propane Jane: Vaccinations is old science. Washing hands, social distancing, wearing masks--all that's been around for 100 years. What will it take for people to finally wake up? Other countries are getting it together but we aren't.
@docrocktex26
Propane Jane: It's drowning in stupidity. Willful stupidity. And these people are leading government! The Republicans aren't breaking rank; they're sticking together.
@docrocktex26
Propane Jane: 70-80% of Republicans don't even believe that Trump lost the election! If reality says what they want to believe isn't true, they'll create an alternate reality. I don't see that getting better with Trump gone b/c they're so invested in it.
@docrocktex26
Propane Jane: Alternate reality has become a cultural identity now. They haven't been able to accept that the world is changing. They believe in the prosperity gospel, barely having food to put in their mouths, yet they still send $$ to televangelists.
@docrocktex26
Propane Jane: Finding common ground between the right & left might have been possible 30 years ago but now there's such a stark difference between what each side wants. How will they find anything in common?
Rick: I'd like to hope you're wrong.
@docrocktex26
Propane Jane: In the general voting population, it may be possible to find common ground, but not in the Senate. On a number of issues, the country can come together, but you get people into office who are more beholden to corporate donors than to constituents.
@docrocktex26
Propane Jane: A lot of judicial decisions have consequences, too. Money in politics makes some things harder to pass. Trump is making overtures to overturn the will of the people.
@docrocktex26
Propane Jane: The electorate is looking less & less like the groups of people they want them to look like, so their recourse is 2nd amendment & suppressing votes, removing people from voting rolls.
@docrocktex26
Propane Jane: I thought it was funny that Ossoff was debating an empty podium.
Rick: And the network airing the debate kept going back & forth between Ossoff & the empty podium, even showing side-by-side shots, too.
@docrocktex26
Propane Jane: They don't feel any fear for their consequences any more. Look how many people voted for the pedophile in the GA election. They're voting their cultural identity.
@docrocktex26
Propane Jane: People have this boundless optimism that certain things just can't happen here...until it actually happens. So many of us warned the virus would be an absolute disaster, yet they voted for Trump again.
Rick: Even I never imagined it would be this bad
@docrocktex26
Propane Jane: We've never seen someone this sociopathic wanting to take office so they could be bad at it.
