Heads up to aspiring TV writers. Do not ever send a writer or producer a script if they haven’t told you that you can send it. If you have a producer’s email address, the standard is to reach out with a (very) brief description of your script and ask if you can send it.
This is true if you’re submitting it for hiring purposes, or if you’re asking them to give you notes. It protects you and them. Even agents & managers ask first before they submit something.
Also: never submit a spec script for a currently show to anyone who *actually works on that show*. Never never never. They’re not allowed to read it, and just by sending it you are compromising them.
(If they have agreed to read it, they are either doing something shady or somehow they haven’t been informed of the standards.)
I’ve had to tell close friends I can’t read their scripts after reading a brief description because I’m worried there might be some overlap with a project I’m working on or developing. It’s okay! It protects both of us.
Accusations like this are a really big deal & if you follow standard industry practices, you don’t have to worry about them. You’ll know who’s read your work (and have the email to prove it, if there’s a discrepancy). https://twitter.com/mariadecotis/status/1336057381860601862
