Haven't seen anything like it on my TL because I don't think anyone I follow is THAT obsessive, but knowing there are folks who assume Chainsaw Man is getting "cut short" because it's ending on it's own terms instead of staying on for a few years reminds me how averse the shonen
fandom can be towards the idea of a series well...actually ending. I guess to be fair there are folks who can be like that about mainstream media in general but even as someone who likes and consumes a lot of shonen I've always been a little weirded out how much some
fans will absolutely lose their minds at the thought of their favorite series ending. ESPECIALLY if it hasn't addressed every single piece of lore presented regardless of it's relevance towards the actual themes or direction of the story (this makes me worried about One Piece)
Like I get being really attached to this stuff. I've been obsessive over plenty of these franchises in my day and still am, but I also like when stuff well...actually ends, because then I can look back at what was great about it and appreciate its consistency.
And I get it, I know a lot of shonen, ESPECIALLY the mainstream battle stuff in JUMP is designed to go on until enough of the audience gets bored with it, but it both makes me deeply appreciate the stuff that commits to ending on its own terms and also doesn't negate the
reality that even more than seeing your favorite series end, it's incredibly sad when a series you like gets dragged out to the point that even when it DOES end, you've stopped caring
I mean, as much as I dunk on Bleach, its depressing knowing that I used to be a big fan of it, and really dug the early stuff, but it dragged on for so long that even by the time the final arc started I'd lost all interest in anything that was happening.
Even more depressing is when fan demand to keep certain franchises going results in stuff not being allowed to die (and again this isn't exclusive to just shonen but it can be pretty prevalent there) and folks get burned out by that. Folks complain about stuff like Boruto and
DB Super, having hurt the image of their original series, but well...y'all wanted more Naruto and Dragonball and the corporations listened to you. That's the quality result when you zombify stories that way.
This went long but the point here is that while it can be sad when a series you really like ends, when it gets to end on it's own terms? FUCKING CELEBRATE IT.
Even if you can't continue consuming it, it'll at least be something you can come back to or at least remember fondly
