I've covered Alabama & Auburn football for the better part of the last 6 seasons. I've truly grown to love & respect both programs... But, if you follow me on here, you probably know I am a South Carolina Alum. Not long after I moved to AL (in 2015) Coach Spurrier resigned... 1/9
Spurrier was MY coach. We both started at SC in 2005 (me, a clueless freshman😅). I got my start in sports broadcast a couple years later working for the athletic department, including spending the EARLY Sunday mornings after each game as crew on 'The Steve Spurrier Show'... 2/9
So, when the 'Spurrier Era' was over, it hurt. As great of a person Muschamp is, he was a foreign concept to me. So, when I started spending my Saturdays covering Bama & Auburn...it became EXTREMELY easy to be apathetic about the regression of alma mater's football program. 3/9
As this coaching search has gone on, a lot of ppl have asked my thoughts. I've been up & down. I mean yes, it seems a risky to hire someone w/ no prior HC experience. BUT, Dabo didn't have any experience DID HE? There's no magic formula. Just hire a good support staff, right? 4/9
I was also taught about 'Beamer Ball' from a young age. My dad grew up in VA & graduated from Virginia Tech. I remember watching the 2000 National Championship game w/ him, and we even had a dog named 'Hokie' while I was growing up. I understand the lineage and admire it. 5/9
Like many, I saw & heard the support from within South Carolina's administration to bring this 'certain former assistant' under Spurrier back to the program. And, of course, I’ve seen the outpouring of excitement from the former players and NFL Gamecocks I follow on here... 6/9
I’m not gonna lie. This jaded Gamecock fan teared up watching today's press conference...when Coach Beamer began talking about 'coming home' & the players who showed up at the facility today to greet him...the players who called him, and on behalf of him during the search... 7/9
Those players were the players I covered when I was at South Carolina...when I felt most a part of this Gamecock family. Nostalgia has definitely set in. 8/9
If you're a Gamecock fan, & haven't already, do yourself a favor listen to this man's words. I'm not ready to admit I'm 'excited' yet... but, ALL THE FEELS and ALL the crossed fingers🤞 that we’re finally heading in the right direction.
