I really hate it when "mentors" in universities take the liberty to say they don't think someone can make it in a field, due to struggles.
Just say you don't want to deal with having to *actually help* someone succeed, you just want to take credit for whoever isn't struggling.

If you're going to call yourself a mentor, then be one. If you can't be one, then send them to someone who is. That's it.
You have no business assuming how far a person can go, I was told a zillion times science wasn't a good choice for me cause of the homelessness/abuse...

Where the hell am I right now?
And why is that?
None of those mentors had any idea, that I don't freaking quit.
If you have a student who's literally running from abuse, living on the streets, and still in your classroom even struggling... don't say they can't make it.

Don't talk to me about academia being about merit, academia runs on privilege.
That's why so many underprivileged people leave.

People struggle, struggling is a part of life. Stop making people feel inadequate for struggling, or telling them they're not going anywhere. This applies to every aspect of life.
That's not an actual predictor of where someone will end up, that's bias. That's all.

(because people have shown concern)
This was not about me, so far I have no complaints about @ASU. Hope it stays that way. I have dealt with this before, in other institutions though.
As you can see by the comments, a lot of people have too, unfortunately.
