NOLA Health Director Avegno says that we're close to the point where hospitals around the state become saturated and need to start transferring to New Orleans, like July
"Our rate of transmission is getting into exponential spread, where it's not just one case after the other." Ie, each case leads to several new ones.
"When we get to that point, we only have a few days to stop it."
"We're seeing a lot of spread in casual settings where people start off trying to do the right thing, and then by the end of the evening they relax it"
Says that what we do now will determine whether or not kids come back to in person class in January. Raises possibility of closing bars and restaurants, but says "that may not be enough."
Notes that the city actually has data from community-based testing in real time, even if official reporting from the state lags a few days.
Says that if you go to restaurant, eat with immediate family, and wear a mask in between taking sips of water or bites of food. (there was a well documented instance of transmission in a restaurant at more than 10 feet published last week)
"We don't want to get back to [April's] peak," says that "nobody" could handle a spike like that right now
In the spring peak, she noted, we were seeing something like 450 new cases a day. We haven't hit that yet, but with exponential spread it doesn't take long to get there
