How I got my first paid screenwriting job (quick thread):
1) My script won the Atlanta Film Festival - yes, I realize the contest route is thankless. I got lucky, since film fests are SO subjective. (I also found my manager via Screencrafting, though, so I'm a competition fan).

2) I kept/keep hammering on my brand as a Southern writer who writes actual Southern characters and stories (but with a hint of magical realism), and NOT stereotypes. I realize that I am lucky that my brand is so easy to classify
3) The director of the Atlanta Film Festival met a producer/actress who was looking for someone with my exact brand (Southern, realism, a hint of magic/supernatural) to punch up a script. He introduced us.
4) After the meeting with the producer, I pitched some ideas on the script and got hired!
So to sum it up, I got my first gig through:
1) Competition win (difficult/subjective)
2) Memorable brand
3) Networking
4) Pitching (and it was via email!)
