Reasoning:
Johnson loves to be loved. And he's promised a deal. In his mind he'll get more love from a deal than from no deal.
That love will only last a few days, then the awful details will emerge.
But he doesn't plan further ahead than a few days anyway ...

... so he'll go for the quick sugar rush of being able to pose on the steps of Downing St with the deal he promised.
We'll have a 48 hour orgy of smug self-congratulation from Brexit MPs and Tory press, and then the details will start to unfold...

... and then most likely, the Tories will tear each other into pieces, cos it will inevitably betray every shade of Brexiter. And the recriminations will roll on for a decade.

... My second reason is: if they really wanted No Deal they could accept the EU deadline of Wednesday, and blame the EU for failure.
They didn't. They're privately terrified of No Deal.
