Things I have learnt from punting for/at the Cheltenham Festival over the years..

Willie Mullins, Gordon Elliot and Nicky Henderson are the percentage call in the Supreme Novice and early season Novice Hurdle form (prior to Xmas) typically is some way off what's required.
4yos are always over bet in the antepost market for the Arkle and benefit from a weight allowance and weak races prior to Xmas. They lose this at the turn of the year and always seem to struggle in the Arkle as 5yos - Let others back these horses.
The Irish normally have two or three that can likely win the Champion Hurdle while we normally have one serious contender come March. Make a decision on who that is by Xmas
7yos dont win the Ballymore, it took a gut wrenching second place with Champ at wild odds to finally believe that one!

If you dont think a horse can win a future Gold Cup then dont back him for the RSA
There is rarely an upset in the Champion Chase because one or two horses are usually a class above and the others are simply Grade 2 horses taking a chance because they are rated too high for a handicap and the owners want a run at Cheltenham.
People will always try and get the favourite beaten in the Champion Bumper on the day so dont take a short price antepost. Even Envoi Allen drifted out to 4/1 on the day before being backed back in to 2/1
A shade of class will get you over the line in the Ryanair so dont back handicappers stepping up in class.

The Albert Bartlett is a great pointer to the Stayers Hurdle every year. It takes one in recent years (against popular belief) to have a touch of class.
The Gold Cup is taken by an extreme stayer, you need to get this trip and further and almost be considered for National type racing. I have never (against popular belief) thought of the class angle to find a gold cup winner. Native River, Denman, Long Run, Don Cossack...
Coneygree, Synchronised, Bob's Worth for me were all dour stayers.
Dont antepost bet after an event, bet before and hope the outcome is what you hoped for. Go in again if your happy with the price. Every race at Xmas should be looked at with a view to Cheltenham. Backed something for the Xmas Hurdle? Back it for the Champion as well.
Some will be more obvious than others in here but some may help one or two people.
