Okay, this is going to sound bad, but yes, worse than a year of WWII for the average American. The body count is higher than any year for the US in WWII, and those men were dying for a cause.
Let's not forget how much easier it is to suffer for a victory, either. https://twitter.com/mtracey/status/1335780382235643904

1942 was the darkest time for the US in WWII, and the early stages were awful. The Philippines, Wake Island, Guam, and Kasserine. But the year also had some big wins.
By the end of 1942, the German sub campaign was on the edge of disaster, as their losses rapidly eclipsed replacements. Plus, Rommel was driven into Tunisia.
Japan was stopped at the Coral Sea, crushed at Midway, and we began hitting back at Guadalcanal.

The losses were high, but there were positive outcomes. Things didn't feel hopeless, and the war was moving in a positive direction, even at a cost.
What victories do we have this year? What has happened that can make someone hopeful for the future?
