A photograph of 3 young friends, Jack Miller, Frank Kosa, and Clifford Olds (right), enjoying a night out at The Monkey Bar, Pearl City, on Dec 6, 1941. Jack and Clifford were on a liberty from the USS West Virginia, berthed at Pearl Harbor.

A barmaid took their picture & offered to sell it to them. They declined. Sadly, the next day would spell disaster for the friends.

'Battleship Row', Pearl Harbor, Hawaii Territory, taken from a Japanese plane at the beginning of the attack on the naval base by the Imperial Japanese on Dec 7, 1941. The explosion in the centre is a torpedo strike on the USS West Virginia.
3/
The attack began at 07.48am. The base was attacked by 353 Imperial Japanese aircraft in two waves, launched from 6 aircraft carriers anchored north of Oahu Island.
4/
The attack managed to damage or sink all 8 U.S battleships, and 11 other vessels. 188 U.S aircraft were destroyed & 19 were damaged. In the chaos that followed, 3 civilian aircraft were shot down at the time of the attack, which lasted for 90 minutes.
5/
2,335 American servicemen were killed, and around 1,143 wounded, along with 68 civilians killed. The Japanese had 64 killed & 1 captured.
6/
Battleships just after the attack. Left to right are USS West Virginia, USS Tennessee, and USS Arizona.
The West Virginia and Arizona sank. The Tennessee was hit by 2 bombs, engulfed in fire, and was trapped between the West Virginia & her berth for 10 days.
7/
The subsequent explosions & fires on the Arizona killed 1,177 of the 1,512 crew on board.
The West Virginia & Tennessee were repaired, rebuilt, & involved in later missions during WW2, with the West Virginia present in Tokyo Bay for the formal surrender Sep, 1945. (Pic 1944)

When the West Virginia was placed on dry dock for repairs, the bodies of 66 sailors were found who had been trapped below deck when the ship sank. Several were lying on steam pipes, in the only remaining air bubble of flooded areas.
9/
Three young sailors were found in an airtight compartment, in the fresh water pumping station, where they had survived on rations & fresh water. A calendar had been marked off with red pencil & indicated that they were still alive on Dec 23, 16 days after the ship was struck
10/
They were Clifford Olds, 20, who had been snapped w buddies the night before, Ronald Endicott, 18, from Washington, & Louis Costin, 21, from Indiana.
In the days following the attack, tapping & banging was heard from the bow of the ship. The tapping only stopped on Xmas Eve
11/
Jack Miller went daily to pray at the place he knew his friend was trapped. The two men from North Dakota had met in basic training & had remained firm pals. He returned to the bar & got the photo to keep as a fond reminder.
Rest in Peace 🇺🇲
