Seeing a few questions about the transition to reflective plates. Let me clarify: there is no new design. Alberta licence plates will continue to look the same. The change only marks a change to reflective plates, not painted ones. #ableg
There is no requirement to change your plate. Starting in fall 2021, when an Albertan gets a new plate or exchanges their current one, they will automatically receive a reflective plate. Again, that reflective plate will have the same design as the current ones.
An advantage to reflective plates is increased security features and visibility for law enforcement. Right now, Alberta is the only jurisdiction in North America not to issue reflective plates. This will change in 2021.

Finally, Alberta already issues some reflective plates: specialty plates like Oilers, Flames, and Support Our Troops, as well as personalized plates and veterans' plates. This change means that standard plates will also be reflective. #ableg
