Today's the first day of the 2021-22 California State Legislature! I will do a thread on all the big ideas that are introduced later today when the Legislature convenes, but let's start off the day with what I am excited about. (Thread!)
First up, new Gen-Z Assemblymember @VoteAlexLee2020! He's planning on taking on corporate greed and giving voice to the young folks. He's been a big champion for housing, calling on his Assemblymember to vote yes on SB 1120, and I can't wait to see what he accomplishes.
The next two months will be rightfully dominated by the conversation around what to do about eviction protections. Asm @DavidChiu is at the forefront of these issues defending California's most vulnerable, as always. https://twitter.com/DavidChiu/status/1335972383530708994?s=20
I am excited to see what other new members do with their right to leave a mark on housing policy in California. Watch especially closely for new members @ChrisWard4AD78, @Laird4CASenate, and @DaveCortese, who got their local YIMBYs' endorsements and would've voted yes on SB 50.
Former members are returning with a gusto for housing. I anticipate a substantial number of housing bills from the Assembly and the Senate today, including the reintroduction of some key bills that failed last year. I'll say more when we can!
The indefatigable Senator Wiener will return as the most prominent voices on housing in the country, in my humble opinion. He's identifying housing and production as a top priority for this year. He's called last year a failure - time to role up sleeves! https://twitter.com/Scott_Wiener/status/1335973459663355906?s=20
Front of mind for folks is how the Georgia races shake out for the United States Senate - those could shape how federal support for housing helps (or doesn't) Californians in big ways. I recommend this conversation: https://twitter.com/dillonliam/status/1330945670195265536?s=20
Another big item for this year will be the future and present of Project Homekey and Project Roomkey, the Governor's signature housing program for COVID-19 relief. I recommend this piece for learning more about the program's successes. https://twitter.com/mlevinreports/status/1333561995384082434?s=20
Today's a day to be optimistic about the Legislature's ability to rise to the challenges of the housing crisis. I will follow up later today with a review of the bills! If you have local work I can highlight, I would love to do that!
