Not the best headline, but, @OwenJones84 does make some valid, if uncomfortable, points here. May's red lines shifted a lot from Lancaster speech. Some, not all, remainers determination for nothing less than full EU membership did, if we're honest, damage the chance for a deal 1/ https://twitter.com/guardianopinion/status/1335950448449089536
Don't get me wrong, hard Brexiters, who want nothing less than the resurgence of an Empire they have fictionalised nostalgic views of, has done a lot more harm I would argue, but there is blame to go around. I include myself in this by the way. 2/
Hindsight is a wonderful thing though. If we had done this, if we had supported that etc. That time is passed though. I'd suggest that what we need to focus on more than blame is consensus right now. 3/
Conservatives won the election on back of having an "oven-ready deal", not a no deal crash out. Brexit has happened though, that can't be changed and arguing for it to be "stopped" is pointless, and ultimately damaging not only for a deal but also future chances of regioning". 4/
Let's be honest here, we need a deal. Right now, as unpalatable as it is, any deal is better than no deal. Time is running out though. Like it or not, a failure to get one will be blamed on remainers. That's politics, it was never claimed it was fair. 5/
As much as I don't like it, personally, I think the best option right now is to try and get a deal to at least minimise some of the damage and then, in about 10/15 years at minimum, ensure that a case for rejoin can't be tainted by claims of beligerance undermining the UK. 6/
It is important that the same mistakes of the past aren't repeated though, and that means recognising that some, again not all, remainers, particularly some high profile ones, have done far more harm than good overall. Unfortunately they will be least likely to recognise that. 7/
I'm normally up for debate, but for fairly obvious reasons, and experience, I am going to mute this thread. Was just putting it out there as something to think about, and also because I am well aware that too many will only read the article headline and the first tweet. 8/
