My great-great uncle, Leon Arickx. He lost his life aboard the USS Oklahoma 79 years ago today. The day before, he was shopping in Honolulu for Christmas gifts and mailed them. The family received the gifts the same day they received notice he was MIA #PearlHarbor
I visited Pearl Harbor in 2017 - one of the most powerful experiences of my life. I was able to visit the Oklahoma memorial, find his name, and send a picture to my grandmother (Leon's niece). It meant a lot to her, she's never forgot receiving the news of her uncle's death.
Leon's remains were identified in 2018 through DNA testing. He had been buried at the Punch Bowl in Hawaii. He was brought back to Iowa, received full military honors, and was laid to rest 77 years after he perished. A current Navy Admiral even attended. https://globegazette.com/news/local/after-75-years-mitchell-county-sailor-killed-at-pearl-harbor-coming-home-to-rest-with/article_7d4bd7de-3f21-5cb4-a7c5-098cb42730a1.html
