It remains an honor to champion Equitable and Sustainable Infrastructure https://on.nrdc.org/36HLg2e via @nrdc
During my tenure @NRDC I’ve been working at the intersection of racial equity, improving the social determinants of public health, and championing climate justice by advocating for inclusive infrastructure investment - transportation, housing, water, & clean energy future. (1/20)
I couldn’t be more encouraged by the incoming @Transition46 focus on all these issues. As the administration seeks to work for all Americans, I encourage a focus on addressing the challenges of those most in need. & improve our current system (2/20).
We need to understand our nation's history and look at how investments (or the lack thereof) have impacted communities, as the @Transition46 seeks to #BuildBackBetter
It's been amazing to work with advocates & partners from across the nation via @SPARCC for more inclusive policy solutions so #WeALLthrive. In addition to ensuring decision-makers are focused on redressing the legacy of unjust investments from our past. (4/20)
What we know & research continues to show, place matters, where you live matters—your zip code often has more of an impact on your life expectancy than your genetic code. (5/20)
The economic and cumulative impact of harmful infrastructure projects, further exacerbated by climate change, makes matters worse for BIPOC communities often relegated to neighborhoods prone to flooding, poor air quality, drinking water violations, and public health challenges.
We need to advance holistic strategies & inclusive processes upfront that support community-led solutions when developing policy, programs, plans, and practices. Policymakers should take a "Targeted Universalism" approach as coined by @profjohnapowell (7/20)
I should also clarify that when I talk about equitable development, I mean championing public investments without displacement—in other words, making infrastructure upgrades while also thinking about the long-term and intersectional impacts on nearby communities. (8/20)
We need to put policy mechanisms in place to recognize the specific needs and address the challenges of those who are already struggling or negatively impacted by systemic & racial inequities. (9/20) #BuildBackBetter
As a Cultural Bearer, who actively practices the art of remembering. I've learned the power of acknowledgment, the importance of preserving the history, memory, cultural resilience, and legacy of space as a restorative justice approach. (10/20)
I learned years ago from a West African cultural perspective that an ancestor lives on until the last living person remembers their name—and I translate that same truth into my work by acknowledging the cultural legacy of a community. (11/20)
Development often occurs with a Christopher Columbus mindset, discovering and renaming space that existed before the arrival of newcomers, systematically erasing the history and culture of a community. (12/20)
