Ok I had a chance to sleep on this, now let's talk about the ethics of live tweeting junior scholars' unpublished work during a very online AAR https://twitter.com/brennaartinger/status/1335751071872913412
A caveat: this isn't meant to criticize one person in particular, I'm not mad at them. But we need to talk about the practice in general. My panel was not recorded by the AAR because _I_ was the person who did not give consent to record.
I have never once tweeted out I was doing this work--the only reason this exists on twitter is because of other scholars, who no doubt had good intentions. I'm flattered that they wanted to promote me and were excited about my research.
But I did not tweet out this work because I calculated the risks of being an ethnically ambiguous junior female scholar publicly commenting on the alt-right, decided what I could handle in 2020, and decided #nothanks
By live tweeting my unpublished work without permission, other people, all white women, all well-intentioned, decided for me the risks that I should be okay with assuming by being publicly advertised to the alt-right.
In sum: before live tweeting someone's unpublished work, please ask yourself who is supposed to benefit from the practice
Ok this got bigger than I thought it would. I want to reiterate that I am not anti-LTing and I'm not upset with anyone. I just hope for more caution, more consent, and for people to remember that the internet isn't always a safe happy place for everyone
