I've been thinking a lot about the Sportsperson of the Year yesterday and today, and setting aside who should have been honored, what I keep returning to is solidarity. What has made the WNBA players' activism so special is that they have done it together. United.
In that spirit, it feels almost wrong for anyone to be singled out. Layshia highlights that here. https://twitter.com/Layshiac/status/1335825633348206592?s=20
In the W, white players have stood with their Black teammates in ways that remain unique among professional sports (there's something to be said about WoSo, but I would argue that there are differences).
For years, the unity and impact of the activism of WNBA players has been overlooked in favor of recognizing the initiatives of more famous and better paid male athletes. As a Black person, I am disappointed that when the recognition came, it did so for a white ally(who is great!)
Many people have pointed out that the W is majority Black. That is true. The league is also significantly queer, with a variety of gender expressions. As we seek to highlight the stories and accomplishments of these athletes, we should reflect on what it means to be inclusive
