I'm noting that a lot of people who didn't give a fig re equity in public education suddenly care about "re-opening" schools (a thin pretext for dismissing the demands of teacher unions; implicit admission that schools = subsidized childcare that enable workforce participation)
And the play-by-play reporting of pupils' "worsened" performance on standardized tests amid a PANDEMIC that is associated with job losses among low-paid workers, increased food insecurity, & a looming eviction crisis. Talking about a "lost generation."

What are the root causes?
There is work by researchers on education & learning outcomes that shows that stress, poverty, food insecurity and so forth have profound impacts on children's school performance. And that's ON TOP OF the known racial & class inequities borne of reliance on standardized testing.
Why is there a rush to write off a generation as "lost" anyway? We can redress the widening inequities in educational outcomes with much-needed investments in public education, including measures to stem/reverse the growing shortage of educators.
