Parents of autistic children: it’s fine to ask autistic adults if they have any insights into making life easier for your kid. It’s a lot less fine to contact us to offload about how difficult you find your kid. Someone did this to me recently & it’s brought up awful feelings.
I don’t know exactly what this person wanted from me. It wasn’t advice, which quickly became clear. I’ve spent years coming to terms with the trauma of feeling like a pain in the arse as a kid & worrying about being a burden now & that little rant set me back more than I can say.
I get it. Parenting is hard. It’s hard to have to rearrange your life around any kid. But it’s so not ok to take it out on random autistic adults. We are not the people to vent to about all the things you can’t do because of your autistic child.
