Remember why this deal is hard and despite what some said was never going to be easy: every other trade deal is about mechanisms of convergence. This (uniquely) is about divergence. And one side says it wants to diverge and one side doesn’t want that. It’s the heart of Brexit.
Ultimately this comes down to how serious Boris Johnson is about wanting to diverge and by how much, or whether he’s more concerned with managing the politics and looking like he’s more serious about it than he actually is.
Unlike his predecessor, he has complete power to decide. His maj will back him and is unassailable. At stake just how big the reversal from the political and economic integration pursued by every British Govt for 45 years. Rarely has a prime ministerial decision been so fateful.
What’s taking shape before us are the first real steps of the journey of the transformation of the UK’s politics and economic model that I write about at the start of the year 👇. All still applies, and then some if there’s no deal. https://twitter.com/lewis_goodall/status/1223606234722467840
