Useful new report from the OECD summarizes what we know about non-exhaust particulate emissions (from tires, brakes, and road dust).

It’s a hidden health hazard from cars/trucks-- one that EVs might actually worsen.

In Europe, PM2.5 and PM10 emissions from exhaust are falling, but non-exhaust emissions-- from tires, brakes, and road dust-- aren't.

In the USA, data isn't great but shows a rising share of emissions from non-exhaust sources (chart from California's CARB).

This matters. Survey of health research:

"Non-exhaust PM were associated with several causes of morbidity, mainly cardiovascular, lung cancer, lung function, pneumonia, myocardial infarction, respiratory markers and preeclampsia."

3/
Note that switching from ICE to electric vehicles doesn't help:

"EVs emit similar levels of non-exhaust emissions as conventional vehicles, and potentially more PM2.5."

Shifting toward lighter vehicles-- or better yet, away from cars/trucks entirely-- is what we need.
