79 years ago today, Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese. I went to Oahu when I was 5, and the one thing I can remember is visiting the USS Arizona monument. Of course, the attack thrust the US into officially entering WWII, which raged on for almost 4 more years.
The US went into overdrive, as did Hollywood. The Hollywood Victory Committee was set up within a matter of days, and war bond drives were set up around the country. Carole Lombard went to Indianapolis where she raised over $2 million for the war effort.
Spearheaded by Bette Davis, John Garfield and Jules Stein, The Hollywood Canteen opened up in October of 1942. Servicemen (and women!) would receive free food, entertainment and mixed and mingled with stars.
Studios became propaganda machines, with Disney producing hundreds of shorts, training cartoons and propaganda pieces during the war years. Donald Duck was their most popular character, and Der Fuehrer’s Face won an Oscar.
Betty Grable became the most requested pinup of the decade with an estimated 3 million copies of the second picture going out to servicemen.

Sadly, anti-Japanese sentiments were rampant. Propaganda was readily plastered and many businesses refused service to Japanese people.
Japanese people on the west coast were forced into internment camps that were called “Relocation Camps.” Personally, I have family members that were thrown into those camps and currently live a few hours away from Topaz, pictured below.
