I took out $30,563.07 in student loans to attend @UWStevensPoint. Since graduating in 2014 I’ve made $21,131.09 in payments. I still have $29,000 in debt remaining. Over $21,000 in payments and I’ve only made a $1,563 dent in my original amount. 1/
I followed the rules, stayed on top of payments, and have the same debt I started with 6 years ago. I’ve been on an income driven plan since graduating. My first year out of school, my minimum payment was zero and increased over the years. pay above the minimum whenever I can. 2/
I pay above the minimums whenever I can. I paid off my smaller loan early this year, and only with interest frozen due to COVID have I been able to make a dent in my larger loan. 3/
Years of monthly payments have only kept up with interest that accrues each month. I’d like to buy a house and use my money to support my community and a weak economy. I can’t do that while this debt hangs over me. 4/
I consider myself fortunate though. I have a good job and I’ve been able to make payments throughout 2020. So many more people are struggling. Student debt affects People of Color even more. We can recover our economy and help millions of Americans by canceling student debt. 5/
We need serious reform. @JoeBiden can cancel up to $50k per borrower by executive order on Jan. 20th. Beyond that, we need permanent interest reform and affordable college for future generations. College should be how we get ahead, not stay behind. 6/
@GovEvers @LGMandelaBarnes @SarahforWI @SenatorBaldwin Will you support @JoeBiden in forgiving up to $50k per borrower in student debt by executive order? Will you support meaningful debt reform and affordable college for all? #CancelStudentDebt 7/
