Last week were told that the hedgerows along the west side of Nelstrop Road North had been torn up and replaced with fencing, so we went down to have a look. Compare this to how it used to look on Google Maps.
The Shores Fold Farm site has been up for development for some time – planning permission was granted last year after a long legal battle. Presumably this work has been done by the developer, as the hedgerows along the other side of the site facing Cringle Road have also gone.
(Note that this land is within Manchester City Council's boundaries. Nelstrop Road North is the Stockport–Manchester boundary)
Outline planning permission has been granted, but states 'The development proposals include the retention of the boundary hedgerows, scrub and trees.' It's unclear if there is permission to install the fencing, or whether the fencing is within the bounds of the property.
Why are we writing about this? First, it's important we retain the character of green space as much as possible. The proposed Bee Network route along Nelstrop Rd North has a very different feel to its surroundings, but the destruction of the hedgerow endangers this for no benefit
Second, if the site is being developed, it's vital that the existing link between Cringle Road and Nelstrop Road North is not just protected but widened. The current path is too narrow for a shared route, poorly surfaced, partly unlit and with blind corners – far from ideal.
However, it's really important that we make sure this route is fit for purpose. People have been asking for it to be improved in every consultation since the Bee Network was announced, but like many cross-boundary issues we're worried it will slip through the cracks.
Here's why it's so important. Every house in the area on this map can only access the rest of Levenshulme via the A6 – or by the path we've marked in red. Ensuring this 50 metre stretch is not forgotten will ensure this part of Levenshulme is linked to the Bee Network.
One day there *will* be a protected cycleway along the A6, but until then, this small change will make a big difference.
Please, contact your councillors to ask that the Shores Fold Farm site is developed properly, and ensure that this small but essential route is improved. And let's keep pushing for councils to work together to make the Bee Network actually work.
