Historical trivia:

Not every first-term president runs for reelection. Some have died in office, and some choose not to. The following are the ones who ran for a second term and lost (I need to fully list what happened to the others).

Trump 2020
George H W Bush 1992
Jimmy Carter 1980
Gerald Ford 1976
Herbert Hoover 1932
Benjamin Harrison 1892
Grover Cleveland 1888
Martin van Buren 1840
John Quincy Adams 1828
John Adams 1800

There have been 45 presidents. Ten ran for a second term and lost.

2/
Theodore Roosevelt is a special case, because he became president in 1901 when McKinley was assassinated, was elected in 1904, didn't run in 1908, and ran for a second term (and lost) in 1912.

3/
Gerald Ford is another special case. He was appointed Vice President after Spiro Agnew resigned in 1974, became president when Nixon resigned later that year, and lost his reelection bid in 1976. So he was never elected president (or VP) at all.

I think it would be interesting to go through all the presidents and see how they left office, but I haven't done that yet.

I've now done a thread summarizing all the ways presidents have left office: https://twitter.com/dcpetterson/status/1336013195736215555
