thread on the term "transmisandry". the meaning of the term, the importance of the term, and the problems with the term

transmisandry is a term that describes the gender based oppression specifically trans men & transmasculine folks face.
a reaction that many have when encountering the word transmisandry is to see it as endorsing the existence of misandry/cis male oppression. they may see it as an attempt to misappropriate, enact, or deny transmisogyny. its none of those things.
transphobia is inherently entertwined w misogyny - the ways people are women, the ways people aren't women, controlling the bodies of women who aren't "supposed" to be women, controlling the bodies of men who are "supposed" to be women, and so on
transfeminine people experience a specific mix of transphobia and misogyny which we define as transmisogyny. their transness informs & amplifies the misogyny they face; their womanhood informs and amplifies the transphobia they face.
transmasculine people experience a specific mix of transphobia and misogyny as well. however the ways this violence is formed, enforced, and perpetuated are much different and cannot be described as transmisogyny.
transmisandry is about defining that oppression we face sourced from cisnormative society and does not mean we're *more* oppressed than other trans people. transmisandry does not mean transmasculine people cannot be transmisogynistic.
other trans people do not have systematic privilege over transmasculine people.

acknowledgement of these different experiences does not devalue the other. there are not necessarily equivalencies between them, and a truth in one experience doesn't create an untruth in another.
on the linguistics - transmisandry is far from a perfect term bc of how controversial the word misandry is. misandry is often used by "mens rights activists" and other misogynists to claim that (cis) men are oppressed (by women) for being men. obviously thats BS as cis men are
literally the oppressors of every other gender and are the architects of patriarchy, misogyny, cisnormativity, transphobia....i could go on
trans men aren't oppressed for being *men*. they are oppressed for being *trans men*. this is why the term transmisandry is used - to center the transness inherent in these masculine identities. misandry: hatred of men. transmisandry: hatred of trans men
getting wrapped up in linguistics takes the back seat to acknowledgement of oppression, though. denying that transmascs go through an oppressive experience that can't be simply described as transphobia just because transmisandry isnt a palatable term is extremely disingenous
that being said there needs to be a less controversial term for this experience, especially one that doesn't piggyback off terms established by & for trans women. (transmisogyny was coined by transfeminist activist julia serano in her book whipping girl.)
ive come across "transandrophobia" and i like that the best. ive also seen "transmasc-antagonism". feel free to reply w other terms you've seen! hope this was informative
