Borderline Personality Disorder-Thread

Ok so i wanted to do a thread about bpd to hopefully raise awareness as i feel it’s still seen as taboo & lacks proper representation. I’m by no means an expert, anything i mention will either be based on my experience/from knowledge!! //1
About bpd:

Bpd is a personality disorder (categorised into cluster-B) which, most simplistically, involves struggling to process & regulate emotions. This in turn affects our interactions/relationships w others & general outlook on life. Also, is typically only dx in adults //2
Causes :

There’s no official cause - and it differs from person to person - but usually it is caused my some form of trauma (typically during childhood). Some people can just be genetically predisposed though !! //3
Symptoms&behaviour (tw throughout):

S&B are extremely complex & differ from person to person (i’ll try mention them all + a bit about them).
MOOD SWINGS: this is probs the most universal symptom, bpd involves DRASTIC, rapid mood swings - feeling every emotion SO intensely // 4
FEAR OF ABANDONMENT: also quite universal, most people w bpd are CONSTANTLY terrified of being abandoned.
PARANOIA: bc we’re so scared of being abandoned, a lot of the time we can be really paranoid that we are disliked/people are secretly against us
ANGER ISSUES: v common //5
SPLITTING:drastically changing ur opinion on someone/something without a valid reason (and then changing it back)
BLACK & WHITE THINKING: struggling to see a middle ground, seeing things as fundamentally good or bad
REGRESSION: acting “childlike” as a coping/defence mechanism //6
RISKY BEHAVIOUR: eg alcohol/drug misuse, binge eating, SH, spending sprees, unprotected sex w multiple partners etc
IDENTITY ISSUES: not really having a sense of self
BODY IMAGE ISSUES: body dysmorphia is v common
ED/ FOOD ISSUES: this is also common as a result of the above //7
‘FAVOURITE PERSON’: it’s common to have a fp whom we may often rely on for validation. Their mood often impacts ours (ie if they’re sad, we’re sad) & we’re typically quite attached to them.
DISASSOCIATION: disconnecting from urself/ur surroundings (blackouts/memory loss) //8
Positive Symptoms:

ik i mentioned a lot of negative symptoms there, but there are positives too !! ie being EXTREMELY empathetic, typically better at detecting emotions than the average person, great self-awareness, strong loyalty & displaying positive emotions prominently //9
Treatment/support:

There’s unfortunately no specific treatment for bpd; medication (ie antidepressants & mood-stabilisers)& talking therapies are often used to help ease symptoms. Support from peers also goes a long way!! (ie reassurance, consistency, patience, empathy etc)//10
I’ve kept this v simple so that it’s easy to follow, so i may not have mentioned everything, but hopefully i’ve conveyed the conveyed main message!! If anyone has it, suspects they have it, wants more info etc(or anyone struggling w their mh in general) my DM’s are always open 💕
