#OnThisDay 7 Dec 1815 Marshal Michael Ney was executed for treason.

After his trial nearly all of the Chamber of peers voted for the death penalty (137 of 160)

He was taken to the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris & shot by firing squad.

He reportedly gave the order to fire himself.
He was killed #OnThisDay however there is a fascinating Conspiracy theory:

As a Mason Ney was swapped for a double/wore something bullet proof, escaped to America.

Decades later a school teacher in S. Carolina called himself "Peter Stuart Ney" & claimed to be the Marshal...
... This "Peter Ney" had red hair like the Marshal, visible wounds from sword cuts & a brilliant knowledge of the Napoleonic Wars.

When he was buried there was so much local uncertainty his headstone reads he was a Soldier under Napoleon.

He was probably a Scottish "conman"!
It adds a fascinating element to the execution, possibly there wasn't a final headshot as was usual, apparently Ney fell forward not backward.

However there is no evidence to suggest it is true.

Ney was buried in Paris, a brave General but turncoat who took the force of blame.
