As a rebellious prisoner, there was a scandal when it emerged he had been forced to wear manacles behind his back for ~35 days

On amnesty in 1870, he emigrated to the US and became involved in nationalist/republican circles

He survived an assassination attempt in NY in 1885

He died in 1915, and was returned to Ireland

His funeral in Dublin was one of the largest in Ireland with hundreds of thousands of spectators, and 20000 people in the procession

His graveside oration was by Patrick Pearse, with all seven signatories organising the funeral
