If you are powerful, you can “speak softly and carry a big stick”

But Boris seems to have blustered and bragged. But when it comes to the final moments he’s got nothing. https://twitter.com/david__dodd/status/1335736912393416705
Trade with the EU amounts to 12% of UK GDP but, by contrast, trade with the UK amounts it only 2% of EU GDP

So by my rough estimate, the UK needs a deal six times more badly than the EU does.
That puts the UK in a congenitally and enduringly weak position vis a vis the EU.

Another way of seeing this is how significantly the news of negotiations is seen both sides of the channel.
And it makes the headlines far less frequently on the continent than it does in the British press.

Which is not surprising given the relative significance on both sides.
Boris has painted the UK into a corner.

The country is no longer the economic superpower that it was.

The EU is simply doing what it has always done for its members - which is negotiate hard for every possible advantage.
The UK used to be a part of that club. Not it’s feeling the cold, harsh winds of being outside.

Remain warned about this. Boris knew too. But he lied to a gullible electorate,
Will the UK be ok? Of course. But only after much pain and belt tightening.
Singapore is a rich and small country. Perhaps the UK can replicate it. But maybe it can’t.

Meanwhile the average Briton will have to suffer far more than had the UK remained.
People like me, who are visitors and who earn outside the UK will benefit from a weaker £ and lower wages. Not the average voter.
I was an auto worker in the North East, or a fisherman with fish to catch but nowhere to sell it, my rage at the government for letting me down would be white hot.
But perhaps they don’t see it.
Yet.
