I genuinely thought that if we were to lose the 10 it would be as a result of either a titanic footballing tussle we marginally lost out on, or a series of baffling/corrupt refereeing decisions going against us. I never remotely expected us to piss it away so timidly ourselves.
Inept management & coaching coupled with the most passive & fragile playing squad in recent memory. Overseen by a CEO & Board as unfit for purpose as any we’ve had in the last 30 years. The support disconnected physically & increasingly emotionally, watching it all fade away.
For the first time in a long time there’s nobody to blame but ourselves. No grand conspiracy. There may well be financial jiggery-pokery elsewhere but with the financial advantage we had that shouldn’t matter. We’ve fucked this one spectacularly on our own. Heartbreaking really.
I’m full of admiration for the glass-half-full troops that can see any kind of silver lining & have the certainty that the team can miraculously put together a run of results to get us out of this. I was there last year, confident we’d find form as we had the better players.
This time round, there’s zero evidence we can do it. The players & manager perpetually talk shite in the press about togetherness & squad depth & superior quality then go out and play as if they’ve just been introduced to each other in the car park. It’s a bewildering shambles.
Allowing Lennon to hang on another fortnight in the hope of competing last year’s Treble has some faint sentimental appeal to some. To most of us, it’s an existential risk to any hope of miraculously salvaging this season. He is done. Get it done. Give us faint hope at least.
There’s much much bigger structural issues at Celtic than the manager. But he’s the immediate one. Deal with that, then there needs to be some evidence of a plan for the future beyond hotels & big TV screens. Someone with vision who can actually communicate with supporters.
I’ve zero confidence that vision or strategy will come from the existing CEO or a Board containing NED’s long past their corporate governance sell-by date. Fresh people, fresh ideas. A foot in the past certainly, but some kind of plan for tomorrow would be helpful too.
Not sure the best way to effect change without the current failing parties acknowledging their role and accepting the need for it. It’s probably going to have to be financial which pains me but enough really is enough. This just can’t go on like this any more.
By some miracle the Board might suddenly start listening and communicating. If they do, you never know, it could turn round. Maybe. But as of today, it looks very much like there’s nothing but trouble ahead on the horizon and that’s a deeply dispiriting prospect for everyone.
Just a minor point: I once asked Celtic’s CEO if there were any plans to upgrade the decrepit main stand. The response was non-committal, but a large part of it was the logistical difficulty of completing major work in a busy stadium. It’s now lain empty for 9 months. Vision.
You’ve got a very pretty front door at Celtic Park now but behind that there’s not a lot of development work happened to improve the match day experience for supporters. My staircase up to 413 is crumbling brieze-block central, the catering primitive. But disco lights I suppose.
Pay your £600+ for your dodgy stream & shut up. Or maybe join the Fans Forum and talk about the pie quality & toilet water pressure to your hearts content. If you’re really angry you can email a question for the AGM. Just don’t expect to be able to ask it, that’s a step too far.
Rant over. Join us on Friday morning for yet another thrilling instalment.
