Or maybe for some of us, supporting children with gender dysphoria, involves a nuanced & holistic approach that considers their psychological & long term needs & therefore we want careful assessment, an evidence based approach & open discussion of the ethics https://twitter.com/lottelydia/status/1335704950819741696
All of this “you are either with us, or you are against us” approach is most likely to harm the children most in need of support - & who really need people to stop throwing more petrol into this horrible debate
As someone born with a variation of sex development, I was harmed when all nuance was lost & the ideological belief that my body was wrong & needed to be fixed, was prioritised over evidence & psychological support for both me and my family
I know what it is like to be a lifelong patient who needs HRT - I know what it is like to be infertile - & being born with a different body that can impact on sexual function, I understand how difficult this can be - and this should not be easily dismissed
I’m not even against puberty blockers in all cases, I think there may be a select group of young people with long-standing dysphoria that persists into adolescence, that would likely benefit - but wanting to shut down the calls for more evidence & open discussion is not helpful
But at present all we know is that the demographic of young people presenting to gender clinics has significantly changed & for this group, even the little evidence available, does not apply - why would anyone want to shut down discussion of ethics & calls for more evidence?
