Hilux drivers, please gather here. I need to tell y'all how my car CONFUSED me this last weekend.
It all started when I decided to attend this event. It was the Solwezi 4x4 training and Hilux 2021 test drive event hosted by Toyota Zambia.
So I started off test driving the Hilux 2021 automatic version with a 4x4 trainer with me in the passengers seat.
First on the list of 4x4 features was the Downhill Assist Control (DAC).
DAC - the car intelligently descends hills for you. You keep your feet off the accelerator AND brake.
We climbed to the top of a small hill and then the trainer tells me we're now going down and that I must take my feet of the accelerator and brakes.
Me:
Trainer: Yes. Put your feet flat on the floor. The car will brake for you.
Off we went down the hill, Hilux controlling the descent.
We get to the bottom of the mini hil. All this time we were in 4L. Then the trainer told me to pick up speed. We went to 3rd gear. 40km/h
Anyway, more hills and mud pools later, I got comfortable with the DAC and we finished the track. Next up was the manual version. Now this is where it gets interesting.
So we then jumped into the manual version. 4L activated. DAC button pressed. As we approached the first hill, trainers says I leave the car in 1 and drop my feet flat on the floor.
The slope up this hill should have been a steep 45 degrees. It was uncomfortably steep. Hilux approached, both my feet on the floor. The Hilux climbed up this thing with my foot nowhere near the accelerator, intelligently.
At this point I'm like
Because I just went up a hill with no gas, then down a hill with no brakes and through a track in 4L and 40km/h.
So there I am in my confusion trying to process what has happened and the trainer says my car can do it too.
Me: let's go!
So it turns out there is this nifty little button under the aircon controls that activates all this magic. (Ts & Cs apply based on the model you have).
Once you press that DAC button, technology takes over and all you do is steer the car regardless of whether you're going uphill, through bumps or downhill.
Over some rocks. No foot on the gas.
Also, if you have a manual transmission vehicle with an iMT button, press it.
And then these people asked me to fill in a feedback form. Didn't I take 2 hours to gather my thoughts 😅
