Anyone who tells you that a bunch of fake “populist” rich hipsters just became Nazis overnight in the last 4-5 years doesn’t know what they’re talking about. This is from 2002.
Also rich assholes claiming that objecting to slurs is weak pussy shit that only limp-wristed coastal elites out of touch with real working people care about is not something pioneered by the current dirtbag left, it’s part of a long strain of hipster bigotry.
This goes back to virulent racism in the NY punk scene (sadly because I love that scene and its music) specifically the anti-Disco (often meaning anti-queer and anti-Black) stance popular among that crowd and stretches back through the 70s as well.
Rock critic Lester Bangs wrote about this and did an okay job of holding himself and others to account for the pervasive racism in punk (and rock) culture more generally.
